About Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti marks the Sun's move into Makara (Capricorn) and the start of longer days. It is a harvest festival with many regional names: Uttarayan in Gujarat with kite flying, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Magh Bihu in Assam and Lohri in Punjab the night before.

Send a sweet Sankranti wish with your name.

When is it? Makar Sankranti usually falls on 14 or 15 January, when the Sun enters Capricorn (Makara).

Did you know?

  1. Makar Sankranti is one of the few Hindu festivals that follows the solar calendar, so its date barely changes.
  2. In Gujarat, Uttarayan turns rooftops into kite-flying parties, and Ahmedabad hosts an International Kite Festival.
  3. Sweets made of sesame (til) and jaggery are shared because they keep the body warm in winter.
