Namaste, dear readers! Today, we gather together to celebrate the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak Day, which marks the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana (passing away) of Gautama Buddha. This year, on the blessed day of Buddha Purnima 2024, let us embrace the teachings of Lord Buddha and reflect upon the profound impact he has had on humanity for over two millennia.
Gautama Buddha, whose birth name was Siddhartha Gautama, was born in Lumbini, Nepal, over 2,500 years ago. The son of King Suddhodana and Queen Maya, he was destined to be a great king. However, life had other plans for him. Despite being surrounded by wealth and luxury, Siddhartha felt an inner calling to understand the true meaning of life and human suffering.
At the age of 29, Siddhartha embarked on a spiritual journey, leaving behind his princely life and venturing into the world as a wandering ascetic. For six years, he studied under various gurus and engaged in rigorous practices, seeking enlightenment and liberation from the cycle of birth and death (Samsara). But, finding no lasting peace in extreme austerity, he adopted the Middle Path, a balanced approach to life.
