Ganesh chaturthi is an auspicious Hindu festival, which is celebrated across India with joy and happiness. It is celebrated to mark the birthday of the Ganesh ji (elephant headed God) as also it is a 10 day festival which continues to bring happiness and blessings of lord Ganesha.
The celebration starts from the warm welcome of lord Ganesha in homes and end with the immersion in the water body. Ganesh ji is entitled with many names popularly know as Gajanan, Ekdant or Ganesha.According to the Hindu calendar, the festival starts on the 4th day of the month “Bhadra” and ends on 14th day of the same month. Ganpati is the God of wisdom and believed to be the benevolent deity of the peshwa dynasty. His blessings are invoked at most religious ceremonies as Ganpati ji is believed to be the one who can remove all obstacles to success.

Significance of celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi
This year the Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration will commence on 22nd of August and ends with Ganpati visarjan on 1 Sept. Celebrations of this festival starts from 10 days back in order to make the idols Lord Ganesh. On the Auspicious day, the homes are decorated to welcome Ganpati Ji with chanting “Ganpati Bappa Mourya”. In some parts of India big pandal, grand celebrations is hosted & decorated for 10 days to welcome Lord Ganesha and take their blessings. Anywhere in the books or granths it is not clearly mention that where the Ganesh chaturthi had been originated but it’s a saying that in back 1630’s Chhatrapti Shivaji Maharaj Began celebrating, as Lord Gnaesh was the kulpati of their family.

Celebrations of Ganesh Chaturhti across India
Every year Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm, worshiped for his ability to remove obstacles and bring good fortune. The festival is celebrated around the country in a very public manner. Families and local communities welcome statue of lord ganesha in their home or The Pandals. The statue of lord ganesha is welcomed on the day of ganesh chaturthi with fervor filled with boisterous devotees, and lots of music and holy rhymes. The statue is usually made of clays. The statues are made before many days amd in varied sizes, Small families usually made statues by themselves too.
The Ganesh murti is worshiped in the morming and evenings with chanting of holy rhymes, offering of flowers, Durva and Modaks. The worship and rituals are done for a day and a half, 3 days, 5 days or 11 days. On the 11th day, Anant Chaudas the murti is ceremoniously brought to lakes or rivers by the devotees for immersion with colorful and musical procession.
In Maharastra, Ganesh Chaturthi is a very auspicious and important festival, celebrated by hudreds of devotees. From day 1 of ganesh chaturthi, to the last day of Anath Chaudas, many rituals, dance performances and other are organised.
