Food safety consists of the absence – or safe, acceptable levels – of food hazards to consumers' health. World food safety day is celebrated on June 7th of every year. Food-borne dangers may in their nature be microbiological, chemical or physical and may often be invisible for the simple eye: some examples are bacteria, viruses or pesticide residues. Food health has a crucial role to play in maintaining food safety at any point in the food chain-from production to harvest, refining, transportation, delivery, preparation, and use.

The food protection of the government, farmers, and customers is a joint obligation. From farm to table, everyone has a part to play to ensure that the food we consume is healthy and not harm our safety. Many organizations like WHO, etc… is pursuing its efforts to integrate food safety into the public agenda through World Food Safety Day, while reducing the burden of foodborne diseases worldwide. It is not so far-fetched to make your food safer, and actually quite easy to achieve. You just have to be mindful of a few precautions when cooking, serving, and storing your meals and of the possibility of contracting an infection from your dinner.

Calls to action for Safe Food

Following are the actions initiated by WHO’s Food Safety Day campaign to promote safe food globally-

  • Ensure it’s safe – Government must ensure safe and nutritious food for all
  • Grow it safe – Agriculture and food producers need to adopt good practices
  • Keep it safe – Business operators must make sure food is safe
  • Eat it safe- All consumers have a right to safe, healthy and nutritious food
  • Team up for safety – Food Safety is a shared responsibility.

Few tips to keep your food safe:

Keep your hands clean -

Fortunately, a pandemic has proven to be enough reason to begin with for those of us who had not previously had this habit. But it is absolutely crucial to avoid food contamination in the cooking process in your kitchen to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water before touching one of the components. Warm water is best and any part of your hand, your fingers and your nails should be scrubbed carefully

Sanitize your kitchen slab and clean it with water -

Even if we are more carefully alert, you are likely to come into touch with your kitchens and sinks with some of the ingredients such as vegetables and fruit and utensils. In order to sanitize these surfaces each day, it is incredibly critical that disease-causing germs and microbes are not transmitted to the food particles.

Clean your kitchen appliances -

Clear the inside and outside of the appliance with water and a healthy cleaning material of your choice. Pay special attention to surfaces such as buttons and knobs which are both vulnerable to the build-up of bacteria and germs, and which may be directly affected by the person cooking.

Rinse all the fruits and vegetables under running water clearly -

You need to rinse them under running tap water for a few minutes before you eat, cut or cook fruit and vegetables. This is an important step that we sometimes forget, especially when we intend on peeling or cutting the product.

Keep away separate and raw food -

The raw and cooked foods should be kept separate from the tools that you use in order to be cut and chop, the utensil you put in, and how they are stored in the fridge. Of course, raw foods contain more bacteria than cooked foods and can lead to contamination if they both come in contact.
