Top 3 Rummy Variants: A Complete Guide to Different Types of Rummy Games

Rummy is one of the most popular card games that can now be played online. There are several variants of this game that are played all over the world. One such variant is the Indian rummy game, which is all about skill and strategy. Here players have a better chance of winning if they possess all the required skills. Forming strategy and continuous planning play a pivotal role in online rummy, and you will need to keep selecting the best moves throughout the game to maximize your chances of winning.

Junglee Rummy is one of the best platforms to play rummy online. You can download the app from the Play Store and play unlimited practice games for free. The app offers a variety of variants such as points, pool, and deals rummy.

  1. Points rummy

Points rummy is primarily played by two to six players. In this game, every card has a predetermined value, and each game lasts for a single deal. The objective of this variant is to score zero points.

To win this game, you need to arrange your cards into required combinations to make a valid declaration. The player who makes a valid declaration first wins the game. Points rummy is a fast-paced variant and it allows the players to see the outcome of every move in real time.

Rules of points rummy

There are several rules that players must follow throughout the game, and some of the most important ones are as follows:

  • A toss is conducted at the start of each game to choose the player who will make the first move. The player who wins the toss makes the first move, and they have the option to pick a card from the open deck or the closed deck.
  • Every game is played as a single deal, and once the round is completed, the winner is declared. Here players do not have the option to play multiple deals. Once a valid declaration is made, the game ends.
  • The player will need at least two sequences for a valid declaration. Out of these, at least one must be a pure sequence.
  • Players have to arrange their remaining cards in either sequences or sets to bring their overall score down to zero.
  • If a player thinks they have bad cards, they can drop out of the game at any point they like. So if you feel that you have little to no chances of winning a particular contest, you can leave or drop out in the middle of the game.

  1. Pool rummy

Pool rummy is a bit different from points rummy. When you play rummy online in this variant, the entry fee paid by each player goes to the prize pool for that game. However, just like points rummy, the aim of the game is to score minimum points.

The game works on an elimination model where players whose score crosses 101 points (in 101 pool rummy) or 201 points (in 201 pool rummy) will be eliminated. In this variant, the last standing player at the table wins the game.

Rules of pool rummy

Just like points rummy, there are some important rules in pool rummy that must be followed throughout the game. Here are some of them:

  • Each player has to pay a certain amount as an entry fee. In practice games, players can use chips to pay the entry fee.
  • Similar to points rummy, players must create at least two sequences, out of which one must be a pure sequence.
  • The remaining two combinations can be either sequences or sets.
  • The winner gets zero points, while the remaining players incur a penalty, which is calculated according to the sum of all the ungrouped cards in their hand.
  • In pool rummy, a player gets eliminated if their overall score exceeds 101 points (in 101 pool rummy) or 201 points (in 201 pool rummy).

  1. Deals rummy

In deals rummy, thel number of deals is pre-decided by the players before the start of play.

Players have to pay an entry fee using chips, all of which get added up to make the prize pool. Each player gets a fixed number of chips, and at the end of the final deal, the player with the highest number of chips wins the game.

Rules of deals rummy

The rules of deals rummy are as follows:

  • Every player gets a fixed number of chips and is required to pay an entry fee to play the game.
  • Each round in deals rummy is valued at a certain point.
  • Players can choose to drop out of a deals rummy game if they have little to no chance of winning the game.
  • There are two types of drops in rummy: first drop and middle drop.
  • If a player drops out without picking any card or making their first move, it is considered a first drop. The penalty for a first drop is 20 points.
  • If a player drops out anytime after making their first move, it is considered a middle drop. The penalty for a middle drop is 40 points.
  • If the player misses three consecutive turns, they are automatically dropped out of the game. This is also considered a middle drop and the player incurs a penalty of 40 points.
  • The player with the most number of chips at the end of the final deal is declared the winner.

Conclusion

These are the three most played variants of the Indian rummy game. Though similar to each other when it comes to gameplay, every variant offers something unique. Depending on the time you have in hand and your skill set, you can choose the perfect variant for yourself.
If you are new to the game and have less time, points rummy will be the best option for you. However, if you are confident in your skills and want to engage in long matches, you can opt for pool rummy or deals rummy.
