The auspicious festival of Govardhan Puja comes just after Diwali and is celebrated all across India. Govardhan Puja will be observed on November 15 this year and people observe this festival to pay respect to Govardhan Parbat, which has saved uncountable people’s lives from harsh weather and rain. Devotees worship Lord Krishna on this day and prepare a large variety of 56 types of food on this day. The food is offered in the shape of a mountain, that is symbolic to the Govardhan Parbat.
It is said that Lord Krishna had lifted the Parbat on his little finger to protect the people from Lord Indra’s wrath, in the form of harsh rain. He had also advised people to pay their respect to the mountain by offering delicacies for a ‘Giri Yagna.’ People commemorate the occasion by preparing vegetarian meals and offer it to Lord Krishna’s idols.
